2012, Photographically Speaking

Sunset over Labrador Park, Singapore

I just checked my blog records – in December, I took a break from blogging as per the reasons listed in this earlier post (in January 2012), and that remained the one and only post so far for 2012. It was not only because of my personal problems that I’ve not been writing, but it was also because I felt that I have nothing to say. I felt empty, and devoid of ideas. And if I couldn’t make a coherent statement about something, I wouldn’t want to make any statement at all here.

I think that barren period is now finally over, and I’m ready to resume updating this blog regularly. Thankfully, in the absence of words, my visual senses kicked in, and I’ve never been starved of ideas where photography is concerned. As a matter of fact, I’ve also secretly resumed my a-photo-a-day project, started way back in 2008 but one which was unfortunately never actually completed. Secretly because inside of me there’s a fear that I wouldn’t be able to complete it – double that fear of failure if I announced it openly.

Today I reasoned with myself, heck it. You only live once, and who am I responsible to but myself if I don’t complete my a-photo-a-day 2012 (APAD 2012)? Nobody would be losing sleep over it.

Not even me :)

So, photographically speaking, 2012 has been extremely fruitful, right from day 1, and I’ve tackled the challenge of shooting something meaningful everyday with aplomb. I thank God that for every single day of the year so far, He has opened up my visual senses to the plethora of images that exist in this world, ready to be savored by those who are willing to slow down and see.

Many times we look, but we just don’t see it. We see, but we just don’t feel. We feel, but we don’t do anything about those feelings.

It is with a great sense of gratitude that I continue to see things that not just excite, but inspire, provoke and intrigue. I wasn’t never really a landscape photographer, and do not see or label myself as such, but this year, I’ve decided to spend more time on this genre of photography, and discovered, to my greatest pleasure and surprise, a tangible and visceral satisfaction in creating images reflecting the urban and natural landscapes around us.

With a resolute determination characteristic of the feeling of optimism often associated with the start of the year, I will no longer restrict myself to doing the same things in a different manner, but to go forth and try new things.

Hopefully, by the end of 2012, I will have a complete portfolio of images, one from every day of the year. I will end off with this giant panorama stitched from 7 images (you see, this is something I’ve always resisted doing) of this year’s River HongBao celebration at Marina Bay Singapore.
