In the longest running musical Les Misérables (and now a major motion musical picture), Jean Valjean the convict tore up his yellow ticket of leave (his parole form, essentially escaping parole) and as his soliloquy crescendoed into its final notes he sang the final line “another story must begin”, vowing to re-start his life in another time, in another place.
2013 began somewhat like that for me. It has been a rough 2 years, and as if losing family wasn’t enough (If you are reading this and wondering what happened, back story is forth coming sometime in the indeterminate future…), now comes the unsettling prospect of losing job security. I told someone I’m not worried at this latest development, but I’m angry. (With the situation, not any one in particular)
But yet like Jean Valjean standing at the cross roads, there are decisions to be made. If God has allowed these things to happen, I also believed He will bring me (and by extension, all of us) out of it all to a higher place. Already I have had my first solo exhibition, Tokyo Dreaming, and I’m encouraged by the tremendous support given by all my friends (you know who you are).
I’m also equally blessed by the opening night reception of my joint exhibition at the Leica gallery Singapore where I was given a chance to exhibit with 5 of my fellow photographers. This exhibition runs till 14th March – so do drop by the Leica store at Raffles Hotel if you have not seen it yet!
January also saw one of my pictures from Tokyo Dreaming featured on Rangefinder Singapore.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen in 2013 to be honest, but like I posted before, photography is like breathing to me. It would be inconceivable not to make pictures for an extended length of time, and for that, I thank God I still retain the ability to do so. I know this is just the beginning, and there’s so much more to be done. I just need the faith to believe everything will turn out ok.
Today I met up with an accomplished artist whom I have worked with before for a possible collaboration in the month of March. While I don’t want to be presumptuous and reveal details ahead of its time, I am optimistic it will come to fruition. This meeting has motivated me to look ahead. I am also going to be back to active blogging after taking a short hiatus with all the exhibition and shows going on.
Another story must begin….
